There are some general rules that apply to interior plant design, you should follow these with some degree of flexibility.
- If you put plants on a table they should not be more than 3′ tall or 3′ wide.
- Floor plants should not be more than 2/3 of the ceiling height. There are some exceptions to this rule. For instance, a plant such as a palm has arching fronds, since the tips of the fronds end in a downward direction they can be allowed to stretch to the ceiling.
- Set small plants on small tables, larger plants on larger tables. If the table or shelf is more horizontal than vertical use a plant that stretches wide not tall.
- Hanging plants are generally a thing of the past but if you use them, the pots should be hung so that they are below the eye level.
- Plants set on the floor should generally come up to eye level unless you are showing off the blooms. This principle is violated fairly regularly, maybe better to think of a plant three feet or taller as a floor plant.
